In 2025, little will change in the basic insurance package in the Netherlands. The mandatory deductible (EUR 385 per year) and the maximum out-of-pocket expenditure for prescribed medicines that are more expensive than the reference medicine (EUR 250 per year) will remain the same as 2024. However, for people with severe limitations due to rheumatoid arthritis and people suffering from COPD stage 2 or higher, physiotherapy will now be fully reimbursed from the first treatment on and there is no limit on the number of treatments anymore. Geriatric rehabilitation no longer requires a period of hospitalization beforehand, and the rehabilitation can also start at home. A geriatric specialist will assess whether geriatric rehabilitation is the best option for someone. Further, codeine will no longer be reimbursed by the basic insurance for cough, pain or acute diarrhoea as scientific proof is lacking, and it can have side effects; it will only be reimbursed for long-term, severe diarrhoea.
