This new special issue of Eurohealth offers a pre-reader for the 2025 European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG). It explores how health can play a central role in renewing the social contract in Europe, strengthening solidarity, trust, and shared responsibility in the face of evolving societal challenges.
This issue features a foreword by Sandra Gallina, Director General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), and a guest editorial by Dorli Kahr-Gottlieb (EHFG) and Ewout van Ginneken (The Observatory). The articles complement the EHFG sessions; topics span from the link between solidarity and innovation, investing in women’s health research, mental health support during crises, what people want out of end-of-life care, transforming hospitals for people-centred health systems, and transparency of public contributions to drug development.
