The 2025 edition of the State of Health in the EU (SoHEU) is out now, offering a fresh picture of the latest developments in European health and health systems. Together, the Country Health Profiles and the Synthesis Report provide concise and policy-relevant insights for all 27 EU Member States, plus Iceland and Norway.

Now in their fifth edition, the Country Health Profiles give concise, policy-focused snapshots that are designed to support countries’ efforts for evidence-informed policy making. The profiles look at population health status, key behavioural risk factors, how health systems are organised, and how well they perform in terms of effectiveness, accessibility and resilience. Each profile also includes a dedicated spotlight on pharmaceuticals, reflecting their growing importance for both health outcomes and budgets. Written in an accessible way, the profiles are designed for policymakers, researchers and other health stakeholders who need to grasp a country’s main characteristics and challenges.
The Synthesis Report draws out common themes and findings from the Country Health Profiles and places them within broader reform trends in the EU, Iceland and Norway. It highlights how European health systems are tackling the primary prevention of noncommunicable diseases, making use of digital health solutions, strengthening primary care and working to secure affordable access to pharmaceuticals and innovation. By connecting the dots between national experiences, the Synthesis Report supports mutual learning and helps identify approaches that can be adapted and scaled in different contexts.
State of Health in the EU is a flagship initiative of the European Commission, and is delivered by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and the OECD, in collaboration with DG SANTE. Grounded in a transparent and consistent methodology that is adapted to national contexts, the 2025 Country Health Profiles and Synthesis Report add a new layer to the SoHEU series, making robust and policy-relevant evidence more accessible than ever to those shaping the future of health policy in Europe.
