How can the EU support sustainable innovation and access to effective antibiotics?

21 June 2023 14:00 – 15:00 CET

Wednesday, 21 June 2023 (14:00-15:00 CET)

During the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2023, the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs worked together to better understand how the EU can support sustainable innovation and access to effective antibiotics. The EU has an important role to play both in combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and in contributing to global solutions.

As the Swedish Presidency comes to an end, there is an opportunity to reflect on the work done on AMR in relation to ongoing developments at the European level. This event will also launch findings from extensive joint research captured in a policy brief developed by the Observatory, which was presented as the background for the discussions of a high-level meeting on AMR in March 2023, organised by the Swedish Presidency.

During a high-level webinar we will discuss these insights in conjunction with the work of the European Commission on the initiatives within the AMR recommendations and within the revised EU’s pharmaceutical legislation, including new mechanisms to encourage the development of innovative antimicrobials.
