Responding to the perma-crisis: Strengthening health systems resilience priorities and best practices

8 June 2023 10:00 – 12:00 CET

Thursday, 08 June 2023 (10:00-12:00 CET)

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, health systems are grappling with an array of unprecedented challenges stemming from long-standing vulnerabilities. These have been magnified by the shock of the pandemic and by a current background of external pressures arising from what has been referred to as a "perma-crisis" in the realms of politics, society, economy, and the environment.

However, countries are responding. They are implementing innovative strategies to bolster the resilience of their healthcare systems and to prepare for future shocks. They are also putting in place new forms of international collaboration that address the global public health dimensions. This hybrid event will address what we can learn from each other about approaches and implementation.

Organised by the Spanish Ministry of Health in collaboration with the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and its Partners, this session marks the Observatory’s Silver Jubilee and 25 years of learning from each other to bridge evidence and policy.

It will bring together senior policy-makers from EU Member States and highlight how they are responding on the key priorities of governance, health workforce, and innovations in healthcare delivery. The session will also explore European and international governance responses to strengthen health system resilience, with the European Commission, WHO, and the current trio of EU presidencies: Sweden, Spain, and Belgium.
