A new national system to shorten waiting times

15 April 2024 | Country Update

Long waiting times have long been a problem in Swedish healthcare, with substantial differences existing in waiting times between regions and between different parts of healthcare. In response, the government implemented a series of initiatives in 2023 aimed at establishing a new national care intermediation system. This system seeks to identify areas of excess capacity across the country, enabling quicker access to care for waiting patients. To this end, the Swedish eHealth Agency has been tasked with developing and providing the necessary infrastructure for the national healthcare intermediation system. The system will be designed to empower care providers to efficiently locate alternative providers capable of delivering the required services in a more timely manner. In the long term, the system must build on readily accessible and understandable information about healthcare and patient waiting times. Also, the Swedish eHealth Agency has been tasked with producing a national catalogue to provide information about all providers in Sweden and the range of services they offer.
