Health Systems and Policy Monitor (HSPM)

An innovative platform that provides a detailed description of health systems and provides up-to-date information on reforms and changes that are particularly policy relevant. In vitro fertilization

26 January 2024 | Country Update

In mid-December, the President of the Republic of Poland signed the Act of 29 November 2023 (amending the Act on Health Services Financed from Public Funds). It mandates the Minister of Health to “develop, implement and finance a public health programme for the treatment of infertility, including medically assisted reproduction procedures, including in vitro fertilization” [1]. The new law requires the MoH to allocate at least PLN 500 million to combat infertility [2]. This is a clear change of policy by the ruling coalition, as the previous Law and Justice government excluded public funding for IVF [3]. All this is in the context of Poland’s demographic changes, where the total fertility rate has fluctuated around 1.4 in recent years [5].
