Long waiting times for medical imaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) have been a concern in Luxembourg. To address this, the government acquired scanners in 2021, allowed ambulatory facilities to offer imaging services from 2023 and launched a pilot programme extending operating hours for diagnostic exams. Against this backdrop, the Luxembourg National Health Observatory (ObSanté) analyzed waiting times for exams performed between January 2022 and June 2023 (with MRI data extended to March 2024).
Most medical imaging exams were completed within two months: 70% of mammograms, 76% of MRIs, and 88% of CTs. MRI waiting times remained stable due to extended operating hours. However, mammogram waiting times increased due to rising demand, and longer delays persist for non-programmed exams. The report highlights disparities between hospitals, high service usage by non-residents, and the need for more detailed data on exam reasons and complexity to better understand waiting time differences.
