New user charges for diagnostic and laboratory services

In April 2024, Law 5102/2024 was published providing for the introduction of new health services user charges. According to Article 25, from 1 May 2024 beneficiaries of the national health insurance fund, EOPYY, are obliged to pay to contracted private diagnostic centres and clinical laboratory doctors EUR 1 per referral for the performance of diagnostic tests of biological materials and EUR 3 per referral for the performance of imaging tests.

Exemptions apply for those with the following conditions: Mediterranean anemia, sickle cell disease, chronic end-stage renal failure who are on renal replacement therapy or peritoneal dialysis or have undergone a transplant, cystic fibrosis, Type 1 diabetes mellitus, amputees with a disability rate of 67% and above, as well as those with a disability of 80% and above, for any condition.
