Preventing genetic discrimination
31 January 2018 | Country Update
The Government of Canada’s Genetic Non-Discrimination Act came into force on 4 May 2017. This law prohibits the requirement that genetic test results be disclosed as a condition of providing goods and services, specifically health and life insurance. The enactment also amends two federal laws, the Canada Labour Code and the Canada Human Rights Act, to protect employees from being required to undergo or to disclose the results of a genetic test to employers. The law also prohibits discrimination on the grounds of genetic characteristics.
