Permitting medical assistance in dying in Canada
31 January 2018 | Country Update
Previously illegal under federal criminal law, medical assistance in dying was made legal in Canada through Bil C-14 in June 2016. This law includes a regulatory framework for the implementation of medical assistance in dying, and the limits on choice. However, provincial and territorial governments are responsible for determining how these decisions can be made by patients and carried out by physicians, and these arrangements are still being worked out. In particular, the precise mechanisms for establishing monitoring systems and documentation continue to remain unclear.
