New government dissolves Crown Agency for Self-Directed Personal Support Services Ontario (SDPSSO)

01 April 2019 | Country Update

In 2018, the new Conservative government in Ontario dissolved an agency that had been established in 2017 to expand direct funding for home care services. The previous Ontario government established the agency, the SDPSSO, to reduce fragmentation in home care delivery and offer users greater flexibility in selecting and scheduling their care. The long-term target was to expand coverage to 40% of home care services — representing over 100,000 users. However, the implementation process was secretive, proved unable to balance the goals and values of all stakeholders, and did not survive the 2018 change in provincial government.
