A Palliative Care Framework for Canada
11 March 2018 | Country Update
The Framework on Palliative Care in Canada Act, assented to Dec 12, 2017, compels the federal Minister of Health to develop a pan-Canadian framework supporting improved access for Canadians to palliative care. The framework must formally define palliative care, identify palliative care training and education needs, identify measurements to support palliative care providers, and promote research and data collection on palliative care. In addition to ensuring the provision of high-quality palliative care, a successful framework design will satisfy the legal and ethical concern that without the option for proper palliative care, a physician-assisted death cannot truly be voluntary.
