Relaunch and update of the National Heat Protection Plan

24 January 2025 | Country Update

The National Heat Protection Plan defines steps to be taken at national level in the event of extreme heat and heatwaves, in cooperation with the nine Federal States and the national meteorological service. It serves as a framework for developing more tailored plans at the state and municipal levels. Originally launched in 2017, the plan was relaunched in 2024 and updated to align with World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

The plan outlines a set of standard measures, including the implementation of early warning systems and targeted public awareness campaigns. These campaigns aim to inform vulnerable populations about the health risks associated with heatwaves and to promote protective behaviours.

The revision of Austria’s National Heat Protection Plan underscores the importance of intersectoral collaboration and expertise. Led by the National Public Health Institute, this effort involved a diverse group of stakeholders, including the Austrian Meteorological Service, the nine states the national Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, the Austrian Chamber of Pharmacists, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, and representatives from various healthcare professions.
