Monaco
Health systems in transition
Country overview
Monaco’s public healthcare system is available to all citizens and long-term, legal residents. A number of private hospitals and clinics offering high level care are also available for those wishing to pay for their services.
The Caisses Sociales de Monaco (CSM) oversees the state funded healthcare system. All workers and self-employed individuals (locals and expats) are required to pay contributions. French and Italian citizens are also entitled to access public healthcare facilities in Monaco provided they have evidence of making regular contributions to their home country’s state-funded health care scheme.
The main sources of funding for the health system are mainly the contributions from employers and employees. Each contributor registers with a doctor and has equal access to publicly funded health services. Complementary medical insurance (mutuelle)is often taken out, to cover any expenses not paid by the state.
GPs are the first point of contact for medical care within the publicly funded healthcare system and, if needed, GPs will refer patients to specialists or hospitals. Emergency care is available for everyone at the Princess Grace Hospital, which operates as the state’s largest public general hospital.
