Biography

Michael Anderson is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Lecturer within the Centre for Primary Care & Health Services Research at the University of Manchester, Senior Visiting Fellow at the Department of Health Policy, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and General Practitioner (GP) working in the National Health Service (NHS). Michael is focused on producing high-impact research concentrated on five key areas: 

  1. Measures of Healthcare Quality
  2. The Public-Private Interface in Healthcare
  3. Workforce Planning and Strategy
  4. Disinvestment From Low-Value Care
  5. Pharmaceutical Policy (including Antimicrobial Resistance)

He was one of the co-research leads for the LSE-Lancet Commission titled ‘The Future of the NHS’, the 2021 England Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) report, and was the lead author of the 2022 UK Health System in Transition Report. He has previously held clinical fellowships with NHS England, and the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN). He regularly collaborates with the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, and worked as a technical advisor with the World Health Organisation (WHO),  and the 2019 Romanian, 2023 Swedish, and 2024 Belgian Presidencies of EU Council.
